Angola DWI Lawyer Discusses Drug Recognition Experts

As an experienced Angola DWI Lawyer I am often asked about drug recognition experts.  I was recently representing a client in Angola, New York. He was coming from Mickey Rat’s, which is a bar on Lake Erie down in the southern tier. He was pulled over and charged with driving while impaired by drugs. Earlier in the day he had smoked a lot of marijuana and got in his car and left. In order to prove a DWAI, which is driving while ability-impaired by drugs, police agencies must utilize a drug recognition expert. We call that a DRE. That is a police officer who has gone through special training and certification to recognize the symptoms of someone who has ingested or smoked different types of drugs.  The DRE will give an opinion as to whether or not they are impaired by drugs.
